Collier-Seminole is close to the Everglades and Big Cypress NPs so lots of outdoor opportunities.Florida Keys Campgrounds Are Usually On The Water Myakka is Florida's Yellowstone in my opinion, the wildlife viewing opportunities are phenomenal. Also check out Myakka State Park and Collier-Seminole, they are large parks with many campsites. If you can get your hand on the State Park magazine with the different regions and park amenities and descriptions, you will see how much they have to offer! In the meantime, their website has the same information. You can't go wrong with Florida State Parks, I visited 20 of them over 6 weeks throughout the entire state and each one is special. They also have a "museum" of a Homestead town and Seminole tribe. I rode through all of them on my mountain bike and saw maybe 2-3 people on the trail every few hours or so the week of Christmas. In addition there are 10+ trails throughout the park, all different landscapes with different names like Sand Trail or Forest trail. You can literally see the fish swimming all around underneath you, turtles and even otters. You can rent kayaks or SUPs and paddle down the crystal clear river. My favorite park is Silver Springs! It is a little out of the way if you are flying in, but there is so much to do there. Enjoy!ĭon't forget about all the beautiful natural springs that Florida has. Just make it work however you can and then come back again in 2020 and book for the following winter 11 months ahead of time. I've been able to get bookings through September and then absolutely NOTHING until April when I started booking 11 months ahead of time.įlorida outdoors in the winter is the best place in the US to be IMO! however, remember everyone else feels the same way and Jan-Mar are the BUSIEST months so plan accordingly. I live and work in Miami and I work hard to get cancellations to go down on the weekends. Some debris on trails and you have to keep an eye on the drivers at all times even when on a dedicated bike path (last weekend a golf cart came down the bike trail at dusk which isn't allowed but no one cares about rules in Florida lol). I think the bike riding along the Overseas Highway is phenomenal. There are lots of fishing opportunities along the length of A1A, the Overseas Highway which is the only highway through the keys. If you can't get a camp site, you can try getting a hotel or Air bed and breakfast and use the parks during the day. Check out the Florida State park website too.Īll these Florida Key state parks are open to the public during the day and have great amenties including rental kayaks and Stand up paddle boards, Pennekamp has snorkeling, diving and glass bottom boat tours and most have bike rentals. ReserveAmerica allows you to scroll through the state to see the different parks including state, federal, and private campgrounds. The Florida Keys are the hardest to get reservations at. If you want to reserve camping for Jan/Feb 2019, don't forget about the Everglades and West Coast and basically the entire state, the panhandle has beautiful white sand beaches.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has more campsites and more availability. If you cancel and only have a 1-2 day reservation, you only receive a refund of about 50% (depending on length of stay). You have to book using ReserveAmerica and they add a booking fee and you pay up front. At Bahia Honda there are 6-9 tent camping sites available that are usually open for that first week they become available to book. The sites open 11 months ahead of time to reserve and they're gone by 8 am. However, it is nearly impossible to get reservations at either Curry Hammock or Bahia Honda (at least for Friday/Saturday nights).
